I was showing someone my websites / blogs this morning, and I
mentioned that the one website is high up on Google for search terms
like "flash photography techniques". When I wanted to show him ..
there's nothing on the first 10 pages, where the website was always on
the first page of Google for that.
So after the meeting I check again, and even when I search for:
" flash photography techniques tangents "
... everyone who links to me and mentions my site is listed on the
Google search, but not my site. Nowhere to be seen.
Why this happened, I have no idea. I obviously don't understand
something about Google when a site can be high up one day, and then
just disappear off Google entirely.
Any ideas why this should be and how I can correct it?

So, you want to rank for "flash photography techniques" but really,
does the page target that?
Firstly, the title of the page doesn't mention "flash photography
techniques" at all. In fact, it looks like that actual keyword phrase
is only mentioned ONCE on the whole page.
There's no H1 on the page, which would certainly help to define its
focus.
You definitely don't want to keyword stuff, but it makes sense to me
that you aren't ranking for a keyword that only shows up on a page
once.
Also, on an aside - you have the CSS & XHTML validator buttons at the
bottom of the page but you have errors on both.

This is because dozens upon dozens of blogs and websites link to it.
It isn't something I "really" "purposely targeted".
It just happened because of the nature of the subject matter and
because it turned out to be a popular series of webpages.
What concerns me is that my entire blog has disappeared off Google.

It would appear that I need to carefully check the coding of the blog.
It is a template that I edited, so the errors could have creeped in
any time during the last 18 months since I've had the blog.

An update. I checked the site with Google Webmaster Tools, and
amongst it all, it gave me this info:
... We detected cloaking on your site and suspect this is the cause.
For example at http://planetneil.com/tangents/ we found:
... Vasodilan Vasotec Vein Support Ventolin Vermox Vibramycin
Viramune Vitaliq Voltare
I have no idea where they see it or what page shows it. I've checked
my entire site and all the folders.
Unless it is hidden as part of some file (php maybe?) somewhere, I
don't see it as an obvious thing.
And I have no idea how to progress from here. I'd really appreciate
any help and advice. :)

Definitely strange that the whole blog is missing - looks to be some
sort of penalty.
Are you using webmaster tools? Did you receive any notices or warnings
there (if you are)?
Phil Payne was right on for bringing up the interlinking - don't just
disregard it. You'd be wise to follow his advice on that one.
Are you up to date with Wordpress? Have any issues with being
excessively spammed or hacked recently?
Also, when I do a site query for your main domain I see a bunch of
pages that actually have a lot of useful and relevant text but I can't
navigate there anywhere from the blog the site forces me on. Why are
you not making these pages accessible? Something seems funky. Tried to
look up an XML sitemap or a robots.txt file and found 404 pages with a
meta refresh back to the home page (which in itself isn't friendly -
no one loves a meta refresh!).
Plus, you seem to be having some canonicalization issues.
